We have started cursive writing. From an article from the New York Times: "Research is suggesting that cursive writing is good for improved brain development in the areas of thinking, language and working memory. It stimulates brain synapses and synchronicity between left and right hemispheres, something absent from printing and typing. "
We are practising because it will eventually increase the speed and efficiency of their communication. Mostly, someday you /they will be signing cheques and reading your parents' notes.
Social Studies and Language Update:
In Social Studies the class has begun an inquiry assignment on an environmental issue in Canada. They have been given class time to research and pick a topic. They will be given more time to create the project the week that we return from break (Jan. 4th to 8th). Enough class time will be given that if they make full use of the time they will not need time outside of class to complete it. Each student was given an inquiry book, which outlines the expectations and gives graphic organizers to assist them in their research and creation of the project. The assignment is due on January 11th.
- We will also be having a Social Studies Test this Thursday December 17th on government. Students were asked to put this in their planners last week. The class has been given some class time to prepare with a partner and some review questions.
- Review Questions
- List some Freedoms we have in Canada.
- What is the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
- What are the three levels of government? Define each. Can you list 3 responsibilities for each?

- Book Report
- The class will be assigned this week a book report that will be due near the end of January. They will have library this week and be given a chance to choose a "just right book". I hope that they will spend some time each day reading this break, 30 minutes a day can make a huge difference. I will be going over the questions and expectations for the class this week.
